Abstract:

Contains trial minutes, briefs, testimony, memorandum, and correspondence relating to the 1949 Smith Act Trial (USA vs. William Z. Foster, Eugene Dennis, et. al.) in which Crockett served as counsel for the 12 defendents, Communist USA Party leaders. Includes large scrapbook of press clippings about the trial. Also contains correspondence with Maurice Sugar concerning Guild functions and contempt charges, as well as disbarment proceedings and appeals against defense attorneys Sacher, Gladstein, Crockett, McCabe, Isserman, and Dennis following the trial, 1949-1950.

George William Crockett Jr. (August 10, 1909 - September 7, 1997) was an African-American attorney, jurist, and congressman from the U.S. state of Michigan. He also served as a national vice-president of the National Lawyers Guild and co-founded what is believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the United States.
